Scaling a Technical Community
USYD Robotics Club·Sydney, Australia
Sep 2022 – Aug 2025
Roles Held
Synopsis
Grew from Workshop Coordinator to President of Australia's largest university robotics club, scaling from 230 to 1,800+ members.
The Making Of
🎯 The Challenge
The club had potential but lacked structure for sustainable growth. An early crisis occurred when 1,100 people signed up for a 60-person event due to an uncapped ticket release error.
💡 The Solution
Immediately halted sales, convened a crisis meeting, and pivoted to a 4-day repeated event format (340 total attendees). Led transparent communication. Shifted culture from 'Growth at all costs' to 'Better, not bigger'—prioritizing team sustainability. Managed end-to-end grant acquittals and created flawless financial ledgers.
🚀 The Impact
The new tickets sold out in 3 minutes. Scaled from 230 to 1,800+ members over 2 years. Secured 10+ industry partners including major tech companies. Learned critical lessons about team sustainability and crisis management.
